If you train the police to deal with mentally ill people it's better for _everyone_.

US police in some areas have been training their officers how to deal with mentally ill people without violence.

Turns out that fewer people get hurt, that the vast majority of incidents can be dealt with non-violently, and that not incarcerating the mentally ill leads to massive money savings:
