I think they've got it wrong.

Schizophrenia isn't caused by demons.

Dumb demons at that...

I'm not sure about the value of "naming and shaming" those not paying minumum wage.

At a basic level, if they are not complying with employment law, they should be made to do so (and, I would hope, fined and compelled to pay those to whom they owe unpaid wages).

But looking at the list of those so named - well, whilst it is important for the individuals owed moeny, in the greater scheme of things it is chickenfeed.

It would be more beneficial to ensure they could employ no more people until they had paid up. Naming and shaming may achieve this, perhaps.

Who is it they are to be shamed by, anyway? They're embedded in an entire class who think payroll avoidance is no more reprehensible than tax avoidance, they're not going to feel bad about going down to the club with their name on such a list. It's having to pay wages that they think is a shameful scandal and an act of theft from innocent victims.

I'm pretty sure it can't do your business much good to appear in high profile places with how much they owe to low paid workers. Even if their peer group are not bothered, customers and employees might avoid them.

At a complete tangent, my LJ rating jumped 50 places to ~250 yesterday, and the only thing that was different was the link you posted to my D-Day post.

So now I'm wondering if their algorithm includes looking for people who link to/from peoples entries.

/ continuing to try and puzzle out how it works.

I suspect it comes from pageviews, and just more people visiting your journal.

> The Curious Idea To Put 'Game of Thrones' In Theaters Each Week

For what it's worth, my local cinema chain is charging $0+$10 in mandatory food purchases for seeing the season finale of GoT.

I would totally do that if it was on in Edinburgh.

Given how little profit they make from ticket sales, that's probably wise.

If you go to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, you can see the plaster reproduction of Michelangelo's David from any angle you like (as long as any angle="from below"; it's a big statue on a tall plinth)

You can look down on it from a walkway as well.

What Happens When Low Wage Workers Suddenly Get a Living Wage?

" I work from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., 35 hours a week, so it's still part-time."

WTF!!! 35 hours PART TIME??? That is SO SCREWED!

Tell me about it. It's not like people can actually do good work over about 40 hours per week anyway.

> Women 'Complain A Lot, Interrupt,' Developer Says At Conference

The headline's been toned down a little since you posted this. Still rubbish though. And could so easily have been made okay -- I would be willing to bet that women programmers find their male partners interrupt and break their concentration when they're coding.

Yes, indeedy. Because when I'm really stuck into something *everything else* is a horrible interruption; however I generally do in fact want dinner, when reminded of it's existence...

Oh yes.

If he'd compared Maven to a kitten then he could have used basically the same wording and it would have gone down really well!

The Curious Idea To Put 'Game of Thrones' In Theaters Each Week

It seemed obviously good to me when I heard it: I'd more like to watch the latest GoT episode with a lot of other fans, than to leave my comfy home in order to watch a film with a lot of strangers. I don't know if HBO are interested in alternative distribution models, though.

Yeah. I don't think I'd want to do it every week. But this week's episode? So would have been worth it.
